Overture™, a fully automated fresh air system, uses sophisticated sensor technology to monitor your home's indoor air quality and provide insights on the current outdoor air quality. When it detects a rise in indoor air pollution caused by increased humidity, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), smoke, carbon dioxide and small particles (sometimes referred to as PM2.5), the system will automatically turn on the nearest ventilation fan to eliminate the pollutant while simultaneously bringing in fresh, clean air from outside. The air in our homes gets dirty.
Our daily activities and the things we put in our home all contribute to poor indoor air quality. So much so that the air inside can be up to 5 times more polluted than the air outside. These pollutants can irritate asthma, cause respiratory issues, and make life miserable. Here are some of the pollutants that contribute to poor indoor air quality:
CO2
CO2 or carbon dioxide is an odorless gas produced from fuel combustion, and human respiration, especially large gatherings of people (which is not harmful unless exposed in very high concentrations).
Symptoms from breathing elevated concentrations can include:
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Impaired work performance
Indoor standards:
There is no indoor standard for CO2, however the amount of carbon dioxide in a home is usually related to how much fresh air is being brought into the home. Generally, the higher the CO2 level the lower the amount of fresh air exchange.

Humidity
Although most people don’t normally consider excess humidity in the home as a pollutant, it can cause health problems if humidity levels are out of range.
High levels of humidity in a home can cause the growth of micro-organisms and air-born allergens, symptoms from breathing elevated concentrations can include:
- Allergic reactions including asthma attacks
- Irritation of eyes, skin, nose and throat
- Coughing
- Congestion
Sources of humidity in your home include:
- Baths and showers
- Cooking and dishwashing
- Firewood
- House plants
- Basements and crawl spaces
- Large gatherings of people (i.e. parties, etc.)
Indoor standards: Relative humidity should be maintained between a range of 40% to 60%.

PM2.5
PM2.5 stands for particulate matter up to 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These are very tiny inhalable particles (30 times smaller than the width of human hair) which can penetrate deep into your lungs and even into your bloodstream.
Symptoms from breathing elevated concentrations of PM2.5 can include:
- Heart attacks and irregular heartbeats
- Decreased lung function
- Aggravated asthma
- Respiratory symptoms such as coughing and difficulty breathing
Indoor standards: There is no indoor standard for PM2.5 but there are ways you can stay up to date when PM reaches harmful levels:
AirNow: Every day the Air Quality Index (AQI) tells you how clean or polluted your outdoor air is, along with associated health effects that may be of concern. The AQI translates air quality data into numbers and colors that help people understand when to take action to protect their health.

PM2.5 is primarily a product of combustion sources such as cooking with natural gas, fireplaces and nearby traffic or coal/gas-fired power plants. It is recommended to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to better control air-borne dust while cleaning your home. Central vacuum systems are best as they exhaust outside of your home, unless you have a HEPA filter.

TVOC
Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) are normally human-made gases.
Symptoms from breathing elevated concentrations of TVOC can include:
- Eye, nose and throat irritation
- Headaches, loss of coordination and nausea
- Liver, kidney and central nervous system damage
- Some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans
Sources of TVOC in your home include:
- Manufactured products such as paints, paint strippers and new fabrics/furniture, carpets, laminate flooring and cabinetry
- Combustion sources such as cooking, smoking, fireplaces, and oven cleaning
- Scented deodorizers, moth repellents, cleaning sprays and cosmetics such as hair sprays and perfumes
